Oral Hygiene Practices To Follow After Every Time You Eat Or Drink

Many factors can affect oral health. This includes what you eat and how often you eat, as per the US Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. During the day, the risk of plaque formation increases as you eat and drink. It occurs when bacteria in your mouth mix with sugary or starchy foods you consume. Therefore, many health bodies, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), advise against the consumption of sugary snacks and drinks and recommend limiting alcohol and smoking. It is important to note that if left unattended, dental plaques can build up and lead to various dental complications.

We spoke to Dr Navata, Consultant – Maxillofacial Surgeon, CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad, who shares important insights into the kinds of oral hygiene practices we can follow after meals.

Mouth Rinse After Eating

Rinsing the mouth after eating is a common practice and is considered good because it helps remove large food particles from your mouth, says Dr Navata.

According to the doctor, it provides a healthier environment by making the mouth less acidic in nature.

Additionally, it supports the prevention of cavities and gum disease while also keeping the mouth clean and fresh, the doctor adds.

Brushing Or Using Mouthwash

The CDC recommends brushing teeth thoroughly twice a day. Most people indulge in brushing in the morning, right after waking up, and later in the night before sleeping. However, according to Dr Navata, brushing after meals is advised to clear away leftovers stuck between the teeth in the mouth.

However, she noted that brushing every time after a meal may not be a practical option.

She says, “After meals, there might be a presence of harmful acids that make teeth more sensitive. The use of harsh toothpaste when teeth are vulnerable can harm the enamel.”

This is when mouthwash can be substituted as a magic ingredient for additional benefits.

Dr Navata shares, “Mouthwash comes in different types targeting various dental health issues like freshness, multi-protection, gum health, etc. Mouthwash can be incorporated into your daily routine to protect your mouth from a host of dental problems. It is important to regularly use mouthwash and choose active ingredients customised to target your oral problems.”

Additionally, she mentions that using mouthwash after eating aids in reducing acidic levels and maintaining the pH balance of your mouth.

Flossing

Apart from brushing your teeth regularly, daily flossing is also a highly recommended tip when it comes to maintaining oral health and hygiene.

Dr Navata says, “Dental floss is easily available in medical stores and can be used to remove minute food particles stuck between your teeth.”

She also suggests that flossing is generally recommended before bedtime.

Tips To Improve Oral Hygiene

Here are some of the most common and effective tips to improve and maintain oral hygiene:

  • Regularly schedule dental visits and checkups every six months.
  • Limit the consumption of sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
  • Che sugar-free gum that contains xylitol.
  • Brush at least twice a day, after eating meals.
  • Practice tongue scraping.
  • Find mouthwash with ingredients suitable for your dental needs.
  • Drink adequate amounts of water.
  • Consume a well-balanced diet.
