Piece by Piece Counseling adds therapists, expands to second location

Piece by Piece Counseling Center, established in 2020 by Jasper native Kara Glendening, continues to expand its mental health services to meet the growing needs of Dubois County and surrounding areas.

What began as a solo practice has grown to include multiple therapists and now offers medication management services, demonstrating the significant demand for mental health care in the region.

“Being located in a small community, mental health resources are limited but growing. It takes all of the local providers to help meet the needs in the community,” Glendening explains. “At Piece by Piece, it is our goal to provide services to as many clients as we can to help meet the needs of the community.”

The practice’s growth is impressive by any measure. Last year, with just two therapists, Piece by Piece served over 220 clients and conducted more than 1,800 appointments. With the recent expansion of providers, Glendening expects to be able to help many more people.

This success has earned the practice recognition as the Best Mental Health Service of Dubois County for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024.

The practice’s growth has been steady and purposeful. After operating solo for about a year, Glendening welcomed Katie Strange, LCSW, who joined part-time before transitioning to full-time.

In April 2025, Heather Nicholson, DNP, ARNP, PMHNP-BC joined the practice, followed by Katie Kempf, LSW in May 2025. Mallory Thimling, LCSW is set to join as a mental health therapist in August 2025.

This expansion has necessitated a second office location. Currently, Piece by Piece operates from its original location at 504 E. Third Avenue in Jasper and a second space at 512 Third Avenue, Suite 102. Plans are underway to move into a permanent office location in late 2025 or early 2026.

“It is an already existing building that we will update and make a comfortable and confidential place to continue our services to the community,” Glendening notes.

The addition of Nicholson as a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner represents a significant expansion of services. She provides initial assessments for mental health medication and ongoing medication management for clients of all ages.

Beyond individual therapy, Piece by Piece now offers a grief therapy group and hosts an annual women’s retreat. The practice maintains its commitment to helping child victims of sexual abuse through its partnership with the Southwestern Indiana Child Advocacy Center Coalition (SWICACC).

“Two of our therapists provide mental health services for SWICACC—treating children who have been interviewed there, caregivers of the children and members of the multi-disciplinary team,” Glendening explains.

The practice also contributes to professional development in the field, with some therapists offering clinical supervision to social workers working toward clinical licenses.

This commitment to education extends beyond the therapy room. Piece by Piece participates in community awareness events and provides educational presentations to local high schools, colleges, and community groups.

For Glendening, who initially considered careers in special education or nursing before choosing social work, the growth of her practice validates her career choice and approach to therapy.
