The 6 Best Online Christian Counseling Services

Regain is BetterHelp’s couples counseling service, and, like BetterHelp, when you sign up for Regain, you can choose Christian-based therapy (this option comes up when asked “Are there any specific preferences for your therapist?”). This makes Regain a great option for Christian couples who want their therapist to not only understand their relationship with each other but also their relationship with their faith, and how that affects their marriage.

Specifically, Regain claims that its Christian couples therapists can help couples with communication issues, intimacy issues, and conflict resolution, just like any other couples therapy service—but also offer additional support to Christian couples by applying biblical or spiritual perspectives into their approach. And with 10,000 therapists across BetterHelp and Regain who identify as Christian or who offer Christian services, finding that support is simple.

While none of my six testers of Regain sought out Christian therapy specifically, many of them had great experiences with the company’s couples counseling. They found their therapists especially helpful when actively working through problems, providing tangible suggestions of things to do to improve their relationships and offering useful “homework” between sessions to practice new skills.

These testers also really clicked with their therapists, finding them friendly and inviting as well as professional. They also reported that their therapists were able to meet their specific needs—which makes me confident that a couple looking for Christian counseling could find the right fit at Regain.

I also surveyed 100 current and former users of Regain:

  • 98% said their therapist met most or all of their needs (one of the highest scores across all 55 companies surveyed)
  • 98% said they were likely or very likely to recommend Regain to a friend or someone like them

“I was pleased with the therapist we were matched with and I appreciated how adaptable she was to my wife and I as we navigated different issues in our marriage and our journey as parents.”

My testers’ experiences with Regain were very mixed. The short sessions (only 30 minutes) left some testers in the middle of an argument with no way to resolve it until the next session. This led to some of my testers being on their “best behavior” during sessions rather than being able to dig into the issues that were really bothering them.

In addition, one couple’s therapist made biased assumptions about their religious and cultural background, inferring issues that weren’t really there. BetterHelp and Regain do offer their therapists free continuing education courses on topics like cultural competency and bias, but we’re disappointed this happened. Christians (and their beliefs) are diverse, so it’s important to have a therapist who doesn’t leap to judge.
