Holiday Travel Tips for Maintaining Good Oral Health

Tiffany talks with Dr. Erinne Kennedy, KCU College of Dental Medicine Assistant Dean of Curriculum and Integrated Learning, about maintaining good oral health during the holidays, particularly while traveling.

  1. Challenges of Maintaining Oral Health While Traveling
Irregular Routines: Packed schedules can lead to missed brushing or flossing. Set reminders or pair brushing with daily routines like morning coffee or bedtime.
Increased Snacking and Sugary Treats: Holiday goodies can raise the risk of tooth decay. Opt for tooth-friendly snacks like nuts and cheese, and drink water to rinse away sugar.

  2. Must-Have Items for Oral Health While Traveling:
    Travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste
Floss or floss picks for easy cleaning
Sugar-free gum or lozenges to freshen breath and stimulate saliva
Refillable water bottle to stay hydrated and rinse after meals
Small, portable case to keep tools clean and organized
    Over-the-counter oral pain relief gel

  3. Maintaining Oral Hygiene on a Busy Schedule:
Brush and floss twice daily, even if its a quick session during a layover or at the hotel. Consider packing disposable toothbrushes with built-in toothpaste for emergency use. Use interdental brushes or floss picks for convenience. Chew sugar-free gum after meals if brushing isnt possible.
Keep a small bottle of mouthwash handy for a quick refresh.

  4. Smart Choices for Holiday Snacks and Drinks:
Healthier Options: Choose fruits, vegetables and nuts.
Limit Sugary Beverages: Drink water or unsweetened tea. Use a straw to minimize contact with teeth if indulging.
Rinse After Eating: Rinse your mouth with water after sticky or sweet foods to reduce decay risks.

  5. Quick Solutions for Unexpected Oral Health Issues
Tooth Sensitivity or Pain: Carry sensitivity toothpaste and over-the-counter pain relievers.
Toothache or Sore Inside the Mouth: Rinse with warm salt water to clean and soothe the area. Apply a small amount of over-the-counter oral pain gel for relief. Avoid chewing on affected side of the mouth.
Dental Emergencies: Keep your dentist`s contact information and research local emergency options at your destination.
